Bennington Smart Casters Review – The Best Workbench Casters for Small Shops

Bennington Smart Casters review – R8 workbench casters
The Bennington Smart Caster featured in Danmade Woodworking’s official review — simple, solid, and shop-ready.

Bennington Manufacturing sent me the latest version of their Smart Casters to test, but they had no input on this review and didn’t get to see it before it was published. All opinions in this Bennington Smart Casters Review are my own.

If you’ve ever tried to move a heavy workbench across your shop, you know how frustrating traditional casters can be. That’s why I was immediately hooked when I found Smart Casters from Bennington Manufacturing — a Pennsylvania-based company that’s been fabricating steel for over 40 years. These things aren’t rebranded imports. They’re U.S.-made, all in-house, and they just might be the smoothest, most user-friendly workbench casters on the market.

About Bennington Manufacturing

Bennington Manufacturing has built everything from custom components for Disney and Universal to industrial fixtures, and they handle every step in-house — cutting, welding, machining, and powder coating. The Smart Caster is one of their signature products, and it’s built with the same level of precision and durability they’re known for.

What Makes The Smart Casters Different?

At first glance, they look like regular heavy-duty locking swivel casters, but the magic is in how you use them. Most casters require you to crouch or kick levers on all four corners just to unlock your bench. The Bennington Smart Casters take a completely different approach. You simply lift your workbench up slightly to unlock them, then lift again to lock them in place. No pedals, no kicking, no crawling around.

This means you can install them on the inside or outside of your bench legs — even hide them if you want — since you never have to access them directly.

Mounting the casters inside the legs keeps the look clean and the footprint compact.

They’re available in two models:

  • R7 Smart Casters: 600-lb capacity (set of four)
  • R8 Smart Casters: 800-lb capacity (set of four)

How to Install Smart Casters on a Workbench

Out of the box, you get four casters, mounting screws, an extended drill bit and drive bit, and clear instructions. You’ll just need a drill, a square, and a clamp (or some double-sided tape if space is tight). Mark your holes, pre-drill, and screw them in. The whole process takes about 20 minutes, even if you’re not rushing.

What’s New in the Latest R8 Smart Casters

If you’ve seen these before, you might notice a few important upgrades:

  1. Simpler setup – the old set screw has been replaced by a removable tab.
  2. Stronger piston – now a single CNC-machined aluminum piece (no glue joint).
  3. Thicker steel tube – upgraded from 1-1/8″ to 1-1/4″ with tighter internal tolerances.
  4. Smoother motion – the piston no longer twists, so there’s less friction and stress on the wheel assembly.

These small changes make a big difference in feel and durability. You can tell when you engage the caster — it just feels solid.

Real-World Performance

My workbench is solid red oak and weighs around 300 lb. With the R8 casters installed, it glides like it’s on ice. The omnidirectional movement lets me rotate or reposition it anywhere in my small shop without wrestling it into place.

Once it’s where I want it, a quick lift locks it down tight — no wobble, no creep.

A smooth mobility test — the casters handle a large, loaded workbench with ease.

Of note, while they roll smoothly over normal shop debris, these aren’t all-terrain casters. They’re designed for flat shop floors, not driveways or outdoor surfaces.

Why I Like the Bennington Smart Casters

  • U.S.-made with precision CNC parts
  • Simple lift-to-lock design
  • Can mount hidden or visible
  • Extremely smooth and stable
  • Built to last
  • Only real downside: costs more than generic casters — but you can feel why.

Are Bennington Smart Casters Worth It?

For me, absolutely. I move my bench constantly, and anything that saves time and frustration earns its keep. The Smart Casters feel like a premium upgrade — overbuilt, smooth, and clever.

If you’re working in a small space or just want a cleaner way to move heavy furniture or equipment, these are easily among the best workbench casters you can buy.
