What Makes The Smart Casters Different?
At first glance, they look like regular heavy-duty locking swivel casters, but the magic is in how you use them. Most casters require you to crouch or kick levers on all four corners just to unlock your bench. The Bennington Smart Casters take a completely different approach. You simply lift your workbench up slightly to unlock them, then lift again to lock them in place. No pedals, no kicking, no crawling around.
This means you can install them on the inside or outside of your bench legs — even hide them if you want — since you never have to access them directly.

How to Install Smart Casters on a Workbench
Out of the box, you get four casters, mounting screws, an extended drill bit and drive bit, and clear instructions. The whole process takes about 20 minutes, even if you’re not rushing.

What’s New in the Latest R8 Smart Casters
If you’ve seen these before, you might notice a few important upgrades:
- Simpler setup – the old set screw has been replaced by a removable tab.
- Stronger piston – now a single CNC-machined aluminum piece (no glue joint).
- Thicker steel tube – upgraded from 1-1/8″ to 1-1/4″ with tighter internal tolerances.
- Smoother motion – the piston no longer twists, so there’s less friction and stress on the wheel assembly.
These small changes make a big difference in feel and durability. You can tell when you engage the caster — it just feels solid.
Real-World Performance
My workbench is solid red oak and weighs around 300 lb. With the R8 casters installed, it glides like it’s on ice. The omnidirectional movement lets me rotate or reposition it anywhere in my small shop without wrestling it into place.
Once it’s where I want it, a quick lift locks it down tight — no wobble, no creep.
Of note, while they roll smoothly over normal shop debris, these aren’t all-terrain casters. They’re designed for flat shop floors, not driveways or outdoor surfaces.
